LG India shifts focus to smartphones

LG Electronics India is planning to launch six smartphone brands on its in the second quarter of 2011. The firm is also planning to set up a new production line for smartphones next year at its Optimus platform greenfield facility in Ranjangaon Industrial Estate, near Pune.
“Our first offering, Optimus Me smartphone, will be launched in June,” said Vishal Chopra, business head, mobile communications, LG Electronics India. The other brands to follow are Optimus 2X, Optimus 7, Optimus Black, Optimus Pad and Optimus Star, he said. The smartphones, imported from South Korea, will be in the price range of Rs 8,990 to Rs 32,000.

“Smartphones will be a new engine of growth for the company and we will be investing in adding production lines to the existing seven in Ranjangaon,” Chopra said. Last year, the company manufactured seven million handsets. It major competitors include Nokia, Blackberry, Samsung and HTC.

“The smartphone market in India is expanding rapidly while the market for basic mobile phones of Rs 2,000 and less is shrinking rapidly,” Chopra said. He said the growth in the Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 segment was low. The growth is higher in Rs 10,000 plus smartphones, he said.

“Since the last quarter of calendar 2010, there has been a trend of high-end mobile phone buyers shifting to smartphones as their prices have fallen due to competition,” Chopra said. LG, which registered 7 per cent growth in smartphones in the October-December 2010 quarter, has seen 18-20 per cent growth in the current.

“With accelerating growth in smartphones, we see a huge opportunity,” Chopra said. And with prices of high-end smartphones falling, they would be available at under Rs 4,500 after a year,

he added.

The company on Wednesday launched a limited edition Optimum One phone with the World Cup logo engraved on it, targeted at cricket enthusiasts.

“With a total of just 3,000 units, the phone is loaded with cricket applications like live scoreboard on the screen, best catches, sixes, among others,” Chopra said. It is priced at Rs 12,990 apiece, Rs 1,000 more than when it was launched in November 2010.

He said the company, the official mobile sponsor of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, will spend Rs 40 crore on advertisements and cricket merchandise.

LG targeting sales of 150m mobile phones

LG revealed that it was targeting sales of 150 million mobile phones this year, a 30 per cent increase year-on-year with smartphones accounting for 20 per cent of total sales, at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2011 in Barcelona.

The company is targeting a four-fold rise in smartphone sales to more than 30 million units, to represent 50 per cent of its total revenues. LG plans to achieve this with the launch of 20 smartphone models globally in 2011.

LG will also introduce phones with dual-core processors, 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) and 3D technology for its high-end smartphones. The company will also be improving its content and services through partnerships with key content providers, with a series of 3D games and movies available through LG Apps.

“We are already focusing all of our resources on delivering the widest variety of smart devices for all types of customers,” said Dr Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

Following its success at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year, LG will be rolling out additional new models at GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, including the LG Optimus 3D, the world’s first smartphone with a 3D platform to record, view and share 3D content, and the eagerly anticipated LG Optimus Pad with its 8.9-inch screen, dual-core processor and Android’s new, tablet-optimized Honey-comb OS, he added.-TradeArabia News Service

Xperia Play and LG Optimus available to pre-order

Play.com has made both the LG Optimus and theXperia Play available to pre-order in the UK, due for release on April 25th and March 28th respectively.

Both devices that have been widely anticipated by those watching the 3D hardware market are similar priced, with the Optimus going for £515, and the Play a marginally higher £520.

3D hardware is currently commanding high prices, and the feeling amongst many consumers is that until the price comes down, and more content is available, 3D is something of a luxury.

Despite recent data showing that 3D is being adopted quicker than HD, sales for 3D TVs are still lower than many manufacturers and industry analysts had predicted, how mobile devices such as smart-phones and tablets will fair remains to be seen.

The Xperia Play combines the Android Gingerbread platform with Sony’s mobile gaming technology making it a smart-phone with a difference, or a mobile gaming device with a difference.

Whichever way you twist it, the device kills two (angry) birds with one stone, so the eyebrow lifting price tag is perhaps justified given that its nearest rival, Nintendo’s 3DS is purely a gaming device despite being considerably cheaper.

The LG Optimus, with 1Ghz of dual-core processing in its innards, has more to offer in terms of pure 3D innovation. The dual-lens camera allows for 3D recording and playback, with a HDMI output for those also in possession of a 3D TV.

3DTVWatcher has been tracking the progress of both these products for some time, to see them now available for pre-order on Play.com means that for those with serious intentions of splashing out, the wait is nearly over.

Brightcove Partners with LG for Connected TV Distribution

Declaring connected TVs to be the next big wave of streaming video distribution, online video platform Brightcove is partnering with LG Electronics and offering a reference application that will allow Brightcove's customers to easily stream their content to viewers using the LG NetCast platform.

"We think connected TV is one of the next interesting platforms to look at after mobile and portable," says Eric Elia, Brightcove's vice president of TV solutions.

Brightcove has previously made reference applications available for the Apple iOS and Google Android mobile platforms. This news is a sign of the growing interest in connected TVs.

The reference application will let customers with little or no design of development experience stream their content to LG connected sets through their own branded app. Customers with greater development skills, says Elia, will be able to create more customized experiences. The idea is to reduce cost and complexity in reaching connected TVs. Users will get the benefit of Brightcove's video analytics for content streamed to televisions. They'll also be able to use their existing ad relationships for their TV-streamed content.

To highlight the opportunity of connected TV, Elia cites Piper Jaffray research saying that in 2012, 220 million flat panels will be sold and over 100 million of those will have connected features.

"The significance is, if you look at the numbers in terms of living room platforms around the world, about 100 million by 2012. If you look at over-the-top boxes, you're probably going to tap out at about 5 million or so in that same time," Elia says.

The connected TV world is just as fragmented as the mobile video world, and not all those customers will be using LG's NetCast platform. Still, Elia guesses that millions of people will try the platform each year.

The Brightcove reference application will be available later in 2011, probably in the first half of the year, says Elia.

Setting a new standard in tablets, LG Optimus Pad offers more to users

Designed for both work and play, LG’s 8.9-inch tablet is convenient to hold with one hand; features Android 3.0, dual core CPU, 3D camera

LG Electronics (LG) has unveiled the highly anticipated LG Optimus Pad. With diverse multimedia and productivity features, the LG Optimus Pad features a unique 8.9-inch display for one-handed portability and uncompromising viewability, a departure from the trend toward tablets featuring 7- and 10-inch screens.

The LG Optimus Pad is powered by Google’s Android 3.0 platform and the NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile processor. The world’s first tablet with a 3D camera, the LG Optimus Pad wraps users in an immersive multimedia environment with Full HD 1080p decoding.

“With a flood of tablets hitting the market, we felt strongly that the LG Optimus Pad needed to set a new standard for what a tablet should be,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “We think the LG Optimus Pad achieves the right blend of portability and viewability with no performance compromises.”

The LG Optimus Pad also represents the fruits of a close partnership between LG and visual computing leader NVIDIA. “The world of computing is shifting under our feet,” said Phil Carmack, Senior Vice President of NVIDIA’s mobile business. “Tablets are quickly taking their place as our most personal computer, providing previously unimagined capabilities and full mobility.

The new LG Optimus Pad uses NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 to give consumers outstanding levels of power, speed and performance.”

Easy Portability, Ideal Viewability

Sized at 8.9-inch diagonally and 149.4-mm horizontally, the LG Optimus Pad offers a sensible solution to other tablets on the market that are either too large for comfortable portability or too small for ideal viewing. The conveniently-sized LG Optimus Pad fits comfortably in one hand, goes anywhere and slips easily into purses and slim briefcases. With 15:9 aspect ratio, the LG Optimus Pad allows users access to the full range of applications in Android Market and its 1280 x 768 WXGA resolution vividly displays multimedia content in full widescreen format.

Powerful, Fast and Versatile Platform

The LG Optimus Pad is powered by Android 3.0, Google’s latest platform optimized for tablets which supports larger display resolutions and applications specifically designed for tablets, including Google eBooks, Google Maps 5, and Google Talk. Android 3.0 also makes the LG Optimus Pad easy to use with a more intuitive PC-like interface. The LG Optimus Pad fully utilizes the 1 GHz Dual Core CPU of NVIDIA Tegra 2 to deliver lag-free web browsing and quick app start up. The superb graphics and multitasking capabilities of NVIDIA Tegra 2 enables the LG Optimus Pad to run multiple apps simultaneously and handle rich multimedia with ease.

LG Optimus Pad: what you need to know

LG makes some great smartphones, so it's hardly a surprise to discover that it's joining the tablet party with the Optimus Pad.

It's a 3D-capable tablet that mirrors thespecifications of the T-Mobile G-Slate that LG has also built for the US market.

Next, don't forget to check out our Hands on LG Optimus Pad review, but first check out how the new tablet stacks up.

The LG Optimus Pad specifications are fairly tasty

CES came and went with only the barest hint of G-Slate specifications, but Mobile World Congress 2011 brought a lot more news.

LG's tablet runs on a 1GHz NvidiaTegra 2 dual-core processor for unmatched performance and power management.

There's also 3G and Wi-Fi, as well as 32GB of storage.

The LG Optimus Pad runs Android 3.0 Honeycomb

If you were wondering why LG used videos to show off its G-Slate tablet at CES instead of just letting people play with the device, the answer is software: the G-Slate software will be Android 3.0, aka Honeycomb, which wasn't finished in time for CES. But it was finished in time for Mobile World Congress last week.

We think Android 3.0 is truly excellent – a real achievement by Google – though it tries to be flashy in a few areas where something clear and simple would do.

The LG Optimus Pad display is 8.9-inches

LG says: "The LG Optimus Pad sets a new standard for tablets by utilising an 8.9-inch display in a form factor that's comfortable to use one-handed. With a 15:9 aspect ratio and Full HD 1080p decoding, the LG Optimus Pad offers users an immersive multimedia environment on a 1280 x 768 WXGA resolution widescreen display.

The LG Optimus Pad is a 3D machine

The LG Optimus Pad has a built-in 3D camera - actually dual 5 Megapixel snappers - enabling users to capture vivid image and video content to be viewed on a 3D TV (which you will need ) or shared on the web via YouTube 3D.

As well as the 1080p Full HD playback, while one of the cameras can record 720p – the 3D recording is not HD. You also get a 2 Megapixel camera on the front for video calling.

The LG Optimus Pad price could be around £250

As we reported on 20 January, there's been speculation that the Pad will be priced at around €299 (£250) - although that would be very cheap indeed for a Especially device that matches the specs of the Motorola Xoom, which may retail for north of £600. We believe that's a lot closer to the mark, especially with the 3D capability.

The LG Optimus Pad UK release date

As yet we don't know when the LG Optimus Pad UK release date will be - we think it will most likely be much later in the Spring after we've seen the Motorola Xoom.

Indeed, TechRadar has been told that the LG Optimus PadUK release date is April or May, by Nvidia's technical marketing director Nick Stam, who we spent some time with on the Nvidia booth at Mobile World Congress 2011.

What's more, the 3D-enabled tablet is going to be available through Carphone Warehouse, presumably on contract deals.
