THE UK RETAILER Play.com has got in early with two of the most eagerly awaited smartphones of 2011 so far, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play and LG Optimus 3D.

The Xperia Play, also known as the Playstation phone, has been tagged for pre-order at £520 with a 28 March release date. The LG Optimus 3D is up for pre-order at £515 and marked for release on 25 April.

The smartphones were two of the highlights of last week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, new attempts handsets running Android by two companies that have suffered a lull in 2011. The Xperia Play in particular has been given a lot of hype, with its first sighting at the end of 2010.

Both have features that are new in the UK mobile phone market - the Xperia Play with its Playstation gaming capability and the LG Optimus 3D with a dual-lens 3D camera and glasses-free 3D LCD display.

The Xperia Play will come out with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but the LG Optimus 3D, disappointingly perhaps, will come out with Android 2.2 Froyo.

But the LG device's dual-core processor should be very capable of running more advanced software, and this should hopefully change with an update sooner rather than later.

Tech Test Drive: LG dLite -- bubblegum pink cell phone (T-Mobile)

Though cell phones come in all shapes, sizes and colors, few handsets are so unique that they instantly stand out in the mobile crowd. Every once in a while, however, a new model struts onto the catwalk with design elements that truly are different. Here are a few recent phones that will turn heads.

LG dLite -- bubblegum pink cell phone (T-Mobile)

The good: The LG dLite is a stylish and fashionable phone for the ultra-feminine. It has a unique hidden LED matrix display, an edge-lit LED surface, a 2.0-megapixel camera, a music player, 3G support, and fantastic call quality.

The bad: The LG dLite is almost a half-inch too long. Its keypad feels a little too smooth and flush to the surface, and the keys on the side are very skinny. It does not have a 3.5mm headset jack, and taking photos with it can feel a little awkward.

The bottom line: With its decent midrange feature set and eye-catching design, the LG dLite is a wonderfully girly phone that would appeal to the young, or just the young at heart.
