Xperia Play and LG Optimus available to pre-order

Play.com has made both the LG Optimus and theXperia Play available to pre-order in the UK, due for release on April 25th and March 28th respectively.

Both devices that have been widely anticipated by those watching the 3D hardware market are similar priced, with the Optimus going for £515, and the Play a marginally higher £520.

3D hardware is currently commanding high prices, and the feeling amongst many consumers is that until the price comes down, and more content is available, 3D is something of a luxury.

Despite recent data showing that 3D is being adopted quicker than HD, sales for 3D TVs are still lower than many manufacturers and industry analysts had predicted, how mobile devices such as smart-phones and tablets will fair remains to be seen.

The Xperia Play combines the Android Gingerbread platform with Sony’s mobile gaming technology making it a smart-phone with a difference, or a mobile gaming device with a difference.

Whichever way you twist it, the device kills two (angry) birds with one stone, so the eyebrow lifting price tag is perhaps justified given that its nearest rival, Nintendo’s 3DS is purely a gaming device despite being considerably cheaper.

The LG Optimus, with 1Ghz of dual-core processing in its innards, has more to offer in terms of pure 3D innovation. The dual-lens camera allows for 3D recording and playback, with a HDMI output for those also in possession of a 3D TV.

3DTVWatcher has been tracking the progress of both these products for some time, to see them now available for pre-order on Play.com means that for those with serious intentions of splashing out, the wait is nearly over.
